The actual type of superstructure is not confirmed as is the original construction date. Probably built under the early Roman king Ancus Marcius. Bridge became historically important when Horacius Cocles defended the bridge against the Etruscan king Porsenna until all Roman warriors had crossed the bridge and removed the superstructure.
